The Proper Name of the CREATOR
Part 9: My Name is YAHWEH!
By Ken Burns
As stated in several previous articles, the Hebrew word YHWH (Strong's
#3068 and # 3069) is the “proper name” or “personal name”--to use English
grammatical terms--of the CREATOR of the heavens and the earth. And most
scholars believe that “Yahweh” is the best way to vocalize and pronounce the
Hebrew word YHWH in English. (For a detailed and very insightful
discussion of this topic, please see the following article:
http://www.eliyah.com/proof.htm.)
A number of English Bibles use the proper name/personal name “Yahweh” to
represent YHWH throughout the entire Old Testament, including:
Rotherham’s Emphasized Bible (http://www.tentmaker.org/BiblesOnline/);
The Jerusalem Bible;
The New Jerusalem Bible (http://www.kofc.duq.edu/scripture/);
and
The World English Bible (http://ebible.org/bible/web/)
There are four verses in which the CREATOR of the heavens and the earth Himself
states that His name is “Yahweh.” The first is in Exodus chapter three:
Exod. 3:15:
And God said yet further unto Moses--Thus shalt thou say unto the sons of
Israel, Yahweh, God of your fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of
Jacob, hath sent me unto you. This is my name to times age-abiding, And this my
memorial to generation after generation. [Rotherham’s Emphasized Bible (EB);
emphasis added]
Exod. 3:15:
God further said to Moses, You are to tell the Israelites, Yahweh, the God of
your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob, has
sent me to you. This is my name for all time, and thus I am to be invoked for
all generations to come. [New Jerusalem Bible (NJB); emphasis added]
Exod. 3:15:
God said moreover to Moses, "You shall tell the children of Israel this,
'Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the
God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, and this is my
memorial to all generations. [World English Bible (WEB); emphasis added]
The second is in Exodus chapter six:
Exod. 6:2, 3:
And God spake unto Moses,--and said unto him--I am Yahweh:
I appeared therefore unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, as GOD
Almighty,--although by my name Yahweh was I not made known to them; [EB;
emphasis added]
Exod. 6:2, 3:
God spoke to Moses and said to him, I am Yahweh.
To Abraham, Isaac and Jacob I appeared as El Shaddai, but I did not make my name
Yahweh known to them. [NJB; emphasis added]
Exod. 6:2, 3 (WEB):
God spoke to Moses, and said to him, "I am Yahweh;
and I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac,
and to Jacob, as God Almighty; but by my name Yahweh I was not known to them.
[WEB; emphasis added]
The third is in Isaiah chapter 42:
Isa. 42:8:
I am Yahweh, that is my Name,--And my glory to another will I not give, Nor my
praise to images. [EB; emphasis added]
Isa. 42:8:
I am Yahweh, that is my name; and my glory will I not give to another, neither
my praise to engraved images. [NJB; emphasis added]
Isa. 42:8:
I am Yahweh, that is my name; and my glory will I not give to another, neither
my praise to engraved images. [WEB; emphasis added]
And the fourth is in Jeremiah chapter 16:
Jer. 16:21:
Therefore behold me causing them to know, by this stroke, I will cause them to
know my hand and my might,--That they may know that my name is Yahweh!
[EB; emphasis added]
Jer. 16:21:
Therefore, behold, I will cause them to know, this once will I cause them to
know my hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is Yahweh. [NJB;
emphasis added]
Jer. 16:21:
Therefore, behold, I will cause them to know, this once will I cause them to
know my hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is Yahweh. [WEB;
emphasis added]
There are also four verses which state with respect to the CREATOR of the
heavens and the earth that “Yahweh is his name”:
Exod. 15:3:
Yahweh is a warlike one, Yahweh is his name. (EB)
Jer. 33:2:
Thus saith Yahweh who doeth it, Yahweh who fashioneth it to establish it, Yahweh
is his name: (EB)
Amos 5:8:
Seek him who made the Cluster and the Giant and turneth into morning the shadow
of death, and who day into night doth darken, Him who calleth to the waters of
the sea and poureth them out on the face of the land, Yahweh is his name: (EB)
Amos 9:6:
Who buildeth in the heavens his upper rooms, and as for his vault upon the earth
hath he founded it, who calleth to the waters of the sea and poureth them out
over the face of the land, Yahweh is his name. (EB)
In addition, there are nine verses which state with reference to the CREATOR
that “Yahweh of hosts is his name” [as found in Rotherham’s Emphasized Bible
(EB)]:
Isa. 47:4:
Our Redeemer, Yahweh of hosts is his name! The Holy One of Israel.
Isa. 48:2:
For of the holy city do they call themselves, And on the God of Israel do they
stay themselves, Yahweh of hosts is his name.
Isa. 51:15:
But I, Yahweh, am thy God, Who threw into commotion the sea And the waves
thereof roared, Yahweh of hosts is his name.
Isa. 54:5:
For thy husband is thy Maker, Yahweh of hosts is his Name, And thy redeemer the
Holy One of Israel, The God of all the earth shall he be called.
Jer. 10:16:
Not like these is the portion of Jacob, For the fashioner of all things is he,
And Israel is his inherited sceptre, Yahweh of hosts is his name.
Jer. 31:35:
Thus saith Yahweh, Who hath given the sun for a light by day, The ordinances of
the moon and the stars for a light by night, Who excited the sea and the waves
thereof roared, Yahweh of hosts is his name:
Jer. 32:18:
Executing lovingkindness unto thousands, But recompensing the iniquity of
fathers into the bosom of their children after them, Thou GOD, the great, the
mighty, Yahweh of hosts is his name:
Jer. 50:34:
Their Redeemer can hold fast, Yahweh of hosts is his name, He will thoroughly
plead their plea, That he may quiet the earth, And disquiet the inhabitants of
Babylon.
Jer. 51:19:
Not like these is the portion of Jacob, For the fashioner of all things is he!
And the portion of his inheritance, Yahweh of hosts is his name.
There are three other verses which use the term “his name” in conjunction with
the proper name of the CREATOR which deserve further study in this
context:
Ps. 68:4:
Sing ye to God, Make music of his Name, Lift up (a song) to him that rideth
through the waste plains, Since Yah is his name, exult ye before him. (EB)
Amos 4:13:
For lo! He that fashioned the mountains, and created the wind, and who telleth
the son of earth what is his thought, who turneth dawn into darkness, and
marcheth upon the high places of the earth, Yahweh, God of hosts, is his name! (EB)
Amos 5:27:
Therefore will I carry you into exile beyond Damascus, Saith Yahweh, God of
hosts is his name.
In verse 27, the EB reads “God of hosts is his name” where the KJV reads “whose
name is The God of hosts.”
